Liberalization & Economic success

By the 1992 liberalization has won and Ireland has become less socially conservative, by figures like Mary Robinson, who became President of Ireland, and David Norris, who led the Campaign for Homosexual Law Reform. Despite gripped by poverty and emigration Ireland became one of the fastest growing economies in the world by the 90’s, a phenomenon known as the Celtic Tiger. By the early 2000s, the Republic had become the second richest member of the European Union, had changed from being a net recipient of EU funds to a net contributor.

Ireland Economic success

The Celtic Tiger reached its peak in 2001, then it slowed down, only to pick up again in 2003. It slowed again in 2007 and in June 2008 the Irish Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) predicted that Ireland would go into recession briefly before growth would resume.
